WMC to offer free EKGs, physical exams to students
WEIRTON — Weirton Medical Center has scheduled its annual Free Sports Physicals and EKGs event, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, in the hospital atrium.
WMC physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and EKG techs will be on hand to perform the physicals for local middle and high school students.
Last year alone, 400 student athletes took advantage of the free service provided by WMC, according to hospital officials. This year is expected to be bigger and better, as more medical professionals than ever will be on hand to help the process go as quickly and smoothly as possible.
WMC also offers free EKGs because sudden cardiac arrest is the number one killer of young athletes, officials noted, adding that nearly 70 percent of unknown, concealed heart issues could be detected in electrocardiograms.
Both sports physicals and EKGs require parental consent. Students must bring the required 2019 physical forms for their respective states. These forms can be obtained from the student’s school office or athletic department. Only one form per student is necessary.
Parents are asked to accompany their children. Advanced registration is not required. The physicals are on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the allotted time for each school.
