Weirton to host firefighter conference
WEIRTON — Professional firefighters from around West Virginia will be converging on the city of Weirton this week in an effort to network, learn from each other and improve their training.
The Weirton Firefighters IAFF Local 948 will be hosting the Professional Firefighters of West Virginia Training Conference Tuesday through Thursday
“It’s for career departments throughout the state,” Lt. Jim Brueck, president of Local 948, explained.
More than 100 career firefighters are expected to attend the conference, which will begin Tuesday with a business meeting and social event at the Holiday Inn.
Wednesday and Thursday will see firefighters take part in a variety of training sessions focusing on truck company operations, fireground survival, engine company operations and vehicle extrication.
“There are four hands-on training sites,” Brueck said.
Classes will be held at the County Road Training Center and Starvaggi Memorial Park in Weirton, and the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department Training Center in Paris, Pa.
“It will be a good chance to showcase Weirton,” Brueck said, noting the last time Weirton hosted the conference was the early 1990s.
