MINGO JUNCTION — Mingo Junction Social Services expects to distribute about 300 baskets to needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.

Sophie Schoolcraft, director of the agency, said several organizations, schools and businesses have donated money and food items for the baskets.

The Thanksgiving baskets will be distributed from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Christmas baskets will be distributed from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Dec. 19.

Schoolcraft said it is an important time of the year to remember the less fortunate. She said persons who want to request a basket must sign up at the Municipal Building. Persons can sign up at one time for both distributions.

The Wal-Mart Distribution Center and Riesbeck’s Food Markets provide food items and the Wheeler Funeral Home has made a cash donation, Schoolcraft explained, while St. Agnes Catholic Church, Harmony Methodist Church, St. Andrew Russian Orthodox and Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church also donate items for the baskets.

Students at Indian Creek Middle and Hills Elementary schools have been collecting canned goods, Schoolcraft said, adding workers at JSW Steel also are expected to make donations.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets will include turkeys or chickens, stuffing and other food items.

Schoolcraft said children up to 12 years old will receive a Christmas gift.

Persons wishing to make a donation for the food distribution can do so by mailing a donation to Mingo Junction Social Service, 501 Commercial St., Mingo Junction, OH 43938, or by calling Schoolcraft at (740) 535-1072.
