Soup kitchen, church hosting ‘Soup Bowl’ fundraiser Sunday
WHEELING — Local potters are throwing support — and some pots — to help with an upcoming Thanksgiving dinner for Wheeling’s needy.
The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling and St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church are jointly hosting a “Soup Bowl” fundraiser this weekend at the soup kitchen, where the public will get the opportunity to purchase potato soup or chili served in bowls crafted by local potters.
Food will be served or available for pickup from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The soup or chili in one of the specially made bowls will cost $20, or $5 in a regular bowl. Take home quarts will be priced at $8 each.
Take-out orders can be placed by calling the soup kitchen at (304) 233-2992.
Proceeds will be split between the soup kitchen and the church. St. John the Divine will put the money toward its outreach programs, while the soup kitchen will use proceeds to pay for the annual Thanksgiving dinner it provides. The dinner takes place on Nov. 27 — the day before Thanksgiving.
Becky Shilling-Rodocker, executive director of the Wheeling Soup Kitchen, said the partnership with St. John the Divine came about when local potter Lambrose Tsuhlares — a member of the church — approached her with the idea of having local potters contribute crafted bowls for the event.
Among those contributing their wares are Tshulares, Herb Weaver, Sherry Becker-Gorby and Betsy Cox. Those wishing to purchase soup may choose from among potato or vegetarian soups, or chili.
