A student of philosophy: Pat McGeehan wants to teach others

CHESTER — Delegate Pat McGeehan is known for making philosophical references when addressing the House of Delegates, and now he wants to teach others.

McGeehan, R-Hancock, plans to enroll at Franciscan University as a part-time student and pursue a doctorate in philosophy.

“I’ve always been compelled to learn more about the world, and enjoy philosophical contemplation,” he said. “In the long run, I would like to be a college professor.”

McGeehan received his undergraduate degrees from the U.S. Air Force Academy, and served tours in Afghanistan. When he isn’t at the Legislature, McGeehan works as a youth counselor in the Morgantown area.

He also is the author of Stoicism and the Statehouse: An Old Philosophy Serving a New Idea. The book touts the philosophy the ancient Stoics, which stresses the importance of advancing the notions of political freedom.

His Facebook page states a quote from Marcus Tullius Cicero: “The more laws, the less justice.”

McGeehan, however, lists his favorite philosopher as Thomas Aquinas — a Catholic priest and theologian.

“He was one of the most brilliant men who has ever lived,” McGeehan said. “He would always start his debate by strengthening his opponents arguments. After this, he would then demolish the opposition’s arguments.

“He was always respectful of the opposition’s argument. In fact, he was able to better argue their position before demolishing their arguments.”

The philosophy program at Franciscan University is based upon Catholic philosophy, and trains students in all the schools of philosophical thought, according to McGeehan.
