Local government offices close out of virus concern

WEIRTON — As a result of risk factors related to the COVID-19 coronavirus, several area government buildings have either closed to the public, or requested area residents visit only when absolutely necessary.

The City of Weirton Municipal Building will be closed to the public until further notice. City employee operations will continue.

The Weirton Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners on Friday announced it would be closing the Weirton Millsop Community Center indefinitely, beginning today.

The closure of WMCC also necessitates the postponement of league and program activities. The current plan is to resume those leagues and programs at a later time.

For more information on availability of facilities and the resumption of leagues and programs, contact the Park Board staff at (304) 797-8520, or check out the Parks & Rec homepage at the cityofweirton.com, or the Weirton Millsop Community Center Facebook page.

In Brooke County, Follansbee officials have closed the lobby of the Follansbee City Building until further notice.

Payments for water and other bills may be made through a drop box, by mail or at online at www.officialpayments.com. Office staff will be in the building to answer calls and process payments.

New customers should call (304) 527-1330 to set up their service. Those planning to move also should call that number to finalize their accounts.

The Brooke County Commissioners, meanwhile, have requested the public to not visit the county courthouse unless absolutely necessary.

The commissioners encouraged individuals to mail required documents and use the internet to pay taxes as detailed at the Brooke County Sheriff’s Department at http://tax.brookecountysheriff.com.

County Commissioner A.J. Thomas said the commission will continue to meet at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and those meetings will remain open to the public.
