Stormy weather
The heavy rains that swept through the tri-county area Saturday afternoon had Weirton officials scrambling to remove dirt and mud that slid off the hillside onto Marland Heights Road, bringing traffic to a standstill. Hail, some of it golf-ball sized, pelted the area, along with high winds that triggered a tornado warning. Authorities in Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson counties reported no serious problems, and while they fielded calls from several people reporting severe weather, a National Weather Service spokesman in Pittsburgh said the information likely can’t be verified until Monday at the earliest.– Linda Harris
