Man arrested on vandalism charge

STEUBENVILLE — A 24-year-old who police believe was responsible for a recent spate of politically-oriented graffiti is lodged in the Jefferson County Justice Center awaiting arraignment.

Ryan Frantz, 24, 423 Highland Ave., Steubenville, was charged with felony vandalism Saturday.

The graffiti has shown up in a number of locations in recent weeks, including Washington and Market streets. Last week city police reported “anti-capitalist” graffiti “similar to other areas of the city” had been spotted on buildings in the 200 block of South 5th St., the 700 block of North Street and 200 block of North 8th Street.

“It’s very simple,” City Manager Jim Mavromatis said Monday. “It’s not necessary, they don’t realize, even though they may be frustrated and have a stance on an issue, that’s not the mechanism to air it, creating thousands and thousands of dollars of damage. Hopefully, (whoever is responsible) has the resources to pay for the damage that was done.”
