Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce shining a light of hope for holidays

WEIRTON — The Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce is hoping to shine a light on the community for the holidays.

President Brenda Mull said COVID-19 has made this year one no one will forget, and the chamber wants to find a way to bring some hope to the community and look forward to the next year. While the chamber continues to plan for the annual Weirton Christmas Parade, officials wanted to do something else.

“Nothing makes us feel better during the holidays than looking at Christmas lights,” Mull said, explaining the chamber has decided to think outside of the box in an effort to bring some additional Christmas cheer. “We want to illuminate the city of Weirton, and working together I think we can do this.”

For $2 each, area residents and business can purchase a luminaria bag, featuring the Weirton Chamber’s logo, and an LED light.

Mull said she knows there are some neighborhoods in the city which already set up luminaria, but the chamber is hoping residents and businesses throughout Weirton will be willing to support the new campaign, leading to stretches of streets across the community being connected with lights.

The plan would be to have everyone light their luminaria on the same night.

“Just imagine getting in your car, driving all over the city and seeing lights everywhere,” Mull said.

While the program is being launched this year, it’s something which can be built on going forward, Mull noted.

Additional information and order forms for the luminaria will be available on the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce’s website at www.weirtonchamber.com, as well as its Facebook page.
