Weirton Fire Department teaches youth proper fire extinguisher technique

Natalie Wade, 10, of Weirton extinguished a simulated kitchen fire under the direction of Weirton firefighter Wayne Bonovich during a Fire Safety Day held by International Association of Fire Fighters Local 948 Saturday at the Weirton Event Center. Weirton residents of all ages received instruction in the proper use of a fire extinguisher while youth stepped into the department’s mobile smoke trailer to learn about fire safety. The group also distributed about 400 extinguishers, 800 smoke detectors and 200 carbon monoxide detectors to residents. Any remaining extinguishers and detectors will be available for pickup by Weirton residents who present proof of residency at the city’s fire stations during the day. (Photo by Warren Scott)
