New commercial truck driving school looks to Weirton

WEIRTON — A commercial automobile driving school with plans to open an operation in Weirton was among requests before the Weirton Zoning Board of Appeals, April 6.

John Anderson, on behalf of of Billy Big Rig, or BBR, requested a conditional use in a M2 district to operate the school at 4224 Freedom Way.

Anderson explained he was been working with the owners of Weir-Cove to establish the school.

“I’ll use their facility for a classroom and training pad,” he said.

Under current city code, all trade and technical schools require approval of the Zoning Board. The request was approved 4-0.

In other business, a representative of Enterprise was on hand for a sign variance request for its location at 3609 Pennsylvania Ave. Enterprise, which has established a location at Rash Automotive, had requested for a sign of 20 square feet. The maximum for the location under current code is six square feet.

The request was approved 4-0. Also approved by the board:

Three variance requests for signage from Britany Connon, for 3393 Main St., in order to place two wall signs, both of which would be larger than currently allowed under city code. The requested sizes were the same used by a previous tenant.

Two variance requests from Chris Lancaster, for the corner of Brightway and Swearingen, to allow for the construction of two town homes.
