CHESTER — More than 80 years after it opened for the first time, the landmark known as the “World’s Largest Teapot” will be the focal point for a day of celebration, Saturday.
A celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the teapot, located at the junction of U.S. Route 30 and state Route 2 in Chester.
Attendees will be able to purchase food and refreshments, as well as souvenirs — among them the 2021 Fiesta Teapot Day ornament.
The celebration will include music and vendors from across the area.
Proceeds from the day-long event will go toward the preservation and maintenance of the teapot — a wooden structure built by William “Babe” Devon and first opened in 1938, located originally along Carolina Avenue.
The teapot — initially a barrel to advertise Hines Root Beer — was for more than four decades a place where residents and visitors could pick up a hot dog and a drink and also purchase homemade pottery and other souvenirs.
After it closed for business in 1980, the structure moved to various locations until landing at its current location in 1990.
The first Teapot Day celebration took place in 2015 through the efforts of project manager and event coordinator Susan Hineman, who spearheaded the renovation project, and several volunteers, who Hineman has said enable the celebration to continue.
