M&M Hardware again supports Community Stars

Contributed SUPPORTING STARS — M&M True Value Hardware, located at 4148 Sunset Blvd. in Steubenville, is proud of its continued involvement with the Community Stars program and again will present a gift certificate to each of this year’s honorees. Working on plans are Scott Campbell, owner of M&M, far left; his son, Sean, second from left; his daughter, Annie, far right; and Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. Tuesday is the deadline for nominations.

STEUBENVILLE — A business that has served a region for more than a century always has put its customers first.

“We have been here for more than 100 years, and we’ve always made sure we are a part of the community,” said Annie Campbell. “The reason we are still here is because the community always has supported us.”

Campbell; her father, Scott; and her brother, Sean, run M&M True Value Hardware. The store, located at 4148 Sunset Blvd., again will be providing special support when this year’s Community Stars are honored by the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. Main Street Bank is the presenting sponsor for the annual awards program, which will include an Oct. 28 recognition dinner at Froehlich’s Classic Corner.

Being involved with Community Stars, which began in 1998, is important for the local business.

“We’re one of the oldest businesses in Steubenville — we’ve been around for 107 years,” said Scott Campbell. “There always has been a commitment to the community — just like being involved with Community Stars.”

Nominations are being accepted through Tuesday. Ten honorees will be chosen as Community Stars, area residents who do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do.

Community Stars is among the longest-running recognition programs in the Tri-State Area, and the criteria used to make the selections is quite simple: Nominees must work to make their communities better places to live. There are no age restrictions — past nominees have ranged from their pre-teens into their 90s — but all must be a resident of Jefferson or Harrison counties in Ohio, Brooke or Hancock counties in West Virginia or Washington County in Pennsylvania.

Profiles of each of the honorees will appear in a special publication that will be inserted in the newspapers right before the dinner. Each Community Star will receive an award plus a gift certificate from M&M.

“Our Community Stars are special people,” said Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. “You might not have ever seen their pictures in the newspaper or heard about their efforts, but the work they do for other members of the community is special, and we are happy to be able to recognize them.

“We’re thankful that community-minded businesses like M&M Hardware and Main Street Bank are willing to help ensure that the annual program continues to be vibrant and successful,” he added.

Nominations can be submitted by e-mail to mmcelwain@heraldstaronline.com or newsroom@heraldstaronline.com; by mail to the Herald-Star and Weirton Daily Times, City Editor Michael D. McElwain, Attn. Community Stars, 401 Herald Square, Steubenville, Ohio 43952; dropped off in person at the newspaper office during regular business hours; or online by visiting heraldstaronline.com or weirtondailytimes.com and looking for the button on the right side of the homepage. No matter how you choose to submit your nomination, the deadline is Tuesday.
