Brooke County Commission talks board vacancies, museum event

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Commission discussed the need to fill several vacant board positions in the county Tuesday, and heard about plans by the county museum to remember a local historical event.

County Clerk Kim Barbetta announced a request from the Northern Panhandle Workforce Development Board to re-appoint Kim McConnaughy and Mike Vitello to the board, and also to appoint Scott Gallagher to the board to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Jon Meriwether.

All three appointments would be effective July 1 under the request, but it was explained the commission has to take another step before approving the appointments.

“Those will need to be advertised,” Commissioner Stacey Wise noted.

Commissioners also wished to remind county residents they continue to seek anyone interested in filling seats on several other boards.

One member is needed for the Brooke County Museum Board, with one member also needed for the Brooke County Library Board.

The Brooke County Solid Waste Authority also is seeking a member to fill its board, with applications due June 28.

Three seats are available to represent the county on the Northern Panhandle HOME Consortium, with applications also due June 28.

Barbetta also reported several end-of-year, in-house budget transfers, including $2,974 for the County Clerk’s Office; $2,947 for the Elections Office; $246 for the Tax Office; $3,751 for Valuation; $2,400 for Special Projects; $31,020.51 for law enforcement; $2,456.75 for the county jail; $1,703 for courthouse security; and $3,971 for the Rails to Trails program.

In other business, the commission heard from Vickey Gallagher, president of the Brooke County Museum Board, who announced plans to observe the 100th anniversary of the Cliftonville Mine Riot with a program July 17.

“We’re going to have five speakers that day,” Gallagher said. “We think it’s going to be one of the best programs we’ve had.”

Among those slated to speak are residents Terry Wiegmann and Mark Wiegmann and former county sheriff Richard Ferguson, who will discuss their knowledge of the riot, Candace Nelson, author of “The West Virginia Pepperoni Roll,” and Joseph Bogo, author of “Holes in the Hills.”
