Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley awards $445,345 in scholarships to support area students

WHEELING — More than 125 area students will be attending colleges and universities across the country with support from the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley, thanks to the award of scholarship funds.

CFOV administers more than 70 scholarship funds, each with a competitive application process, that are for the benefit of students throughout and beyond the foundation’s eight-county service area that includes Jefferson, Brooke and Hancock counties.

These opportunities are made possible by donors who have established funds to demonstrate a commitment to higher education. Scholarship funds often represent memorials for loved ones, an affinity for a field of study, school/university, intended career path, financial need and even being a first-generation college student.

In addition to having unique criteria, CFOV scholarships can be crafted to support a student beyond the first year of higher education. A growing number of opportunities are structured to provide support beyond the first year of college.

Students can be receiving awards for the first time or through reapplication while many others continue to benefit from multi-year scholarships held by the foundation.

“We are honored to be part of the educational journey of so many area students,” said Susie Nelson, the foundation’s executive director.

“Donors who choose to establish scholarship funds do so for a multitude of reasons, and we are proud to serve as partners in philanthropy. Scholarships support access to post-secondary education that ultimately contributes to achievement of meaningful goals,” Nelson said.

A complete list of awardees can be found by visiting www.cfov.org/scholarship-recipients. The next foundation scholarship cycle will open in January.
