Weirton Parks to offer free day on Saturday

WEIRTON — The Weirton Board of Park & Recreation Commissioners are celebrating 70 years of service to the city’s residents while the city celebrates its 75th birthday.

In conjunction with the city’s 75th birthday celebration, the Park Board is admitting all visitors to both the Weirton Millsop Community Center (WMCC) and Starvaggi Memorial Pool free of charge on Saturday during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at WMCC and noon to 8 p.m. at Starvaggi Pool.

Weirton Parks & Recreation Director Coty Shingle says it’s a fitting celebration for city residents.

“We’d really be nothing without the residents,” Shingle said. “Not only do they provide tax dollars and pay user fees that help fund recreation activities and facilities, but their presence and utilization of our facilities shows their appreciation for our efforts.”

As the Park Board was considering ways to join in the city’s birthday celebration, outgoing Park Board Member Deb Witkowski suggested the free day and the Park Board unanimously agreed.

“We should do something big for the city’s celebration,” Witkowski said. “I think a free day is the perfect gesture.”
