WEIRTON — Area runners are counting down the days before they lace up their shoes and hit the course through the streets and hills and Weirton’s Marland Heights neighborhoods as part of this year’s Marland Heights 5K Classic.

In its 24th year, the Marland Heights 5K Classic Run, Fitness Walk and Youth Fun Run will take place Friday, starting and ending at Marland Heights Park. Organized each year by the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, the event will include a 3.1-mile run, a 2-mile fitness walk, and a youth fun run for kids 12 and under.

“We’re looking forward to a nice turnout,” Chris Krishak, program director for the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, said.

Pre-registration has been set at $20 for adults, $15 for teenagers and $3 for the youth fun run, and will be available at the Millsop Community Center until noon on Thursday.

Race-day registration, which will begin at 5:45 p.m. at the park, will be $25 for adults and $20 for teenagers.

According to Krishak, the youth fun run will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the 5K and the fitness walk setting off at 7 p.m.

Major sponsors for this year’s race are Tri-State Pharmacy, Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Starvaggi Industries, Tomtreyco McDonald’s and Cardinal Operating Co. Other sponsors include First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Guida Realty, Weirton Firefighters IAF 948, Hancock County Savings Bank, the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Ronnie Jones for House of Delegates District 2, Gus’s Goodies, Shop N’ Save, Riesbeck’s in Follansbee, Serra Village, Studio L, Graphics in Print, Fox’s Pizza Den, Mainstream Physical Therapy and Mario’s Restaurant.

“Without them, an event like this isn’t possible,” Krishak said.

Krishak also offered his appreciation to Marc Harris, who has volunteered his time for many years to assist with the preparations and operation of the 5K race.

Awards will be distributed in a series of categories during a cookout following the race, with race timing provided by Second Sole of Youngstown.
