Weirton woman charged in accident involving Brooke County sheriff

WELLSBURG — A Weirton woman has been charged with driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury after striking the Brooke County sheriff’s truck and causing him to be injured Tuesday afternoon.

A report filed by the West Virginia State Police states Sheriff Rich Beatty suffered a crack in his spine as a result of the accident.

On Friday, the Brooke County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Beatty was recovering at home after being treated at a local hospital to which he had been transported by ambulance.

State Police investigating the collision said Tess L. Haynes, 27, of 48 Payton Drive, struck Beatty’s police vehicle from behind on U.S. Route 22.

The sheriff’s department said Beatty had been dispatched to the highway between the Main Street and Harmon Creek exits to divert traffic around a disabled tractor-trailer in the roadway and was inside his vehicle when it was struck.

State police said they found a used hypodermic needle in the deployed airbag of Haynes’ vehicle and heroin inside her purse.

She also has been charged with possession of heroin, failure to control and no seat belt.

Her case is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.
