Nine in consideration to be next West Liberty University president

WEST LIBERTY — West Liberty University’s Presidential Search Committee has narrowed the candidate list for its next president to nine.

The committee met Sunday with its search firm to consider the 59 applicants that applied to be the university’s 38th president. Of those applicants, nine will be contacted for interviews on April 3-4, the university said.

According to previous statements from the search committee and AGB Search, the firm the university has contracted with to help conduct the search, the pool will be narrowed to about three finalists, who would be invited to campus to talk with faculty, students, staff, alumni and the university’s Board of Governors.

A new president is needed after West Liberty University’s Board of Governors chose not to renew the contract of past president W. Franklin Evans. During his two-year tenure at the hilltop campus, Evans was found to have plagiarized portions of several speeches, and faced constant faculty opposition.

Cathy Monteroso, who had been serving as interim provost at WLU, has been the university’s interim president since January.

The next regular meeting of the full Board of Governors is Wednesday.
