Cathy Monteroso gets named West Liberty provost

Cathy Monteroso

WEST LIBERTY — After working as West Liberty University’s interim provost and vice president of academic affairs, Cathy Monteroso was officially announced for the permanent position on Monday.

Following a national search this past spring, WLU stayed within its own administration to fill the spot.

“Monteroso has a great deal of experience for the position and the strong support from campus stakeholders following the campus interviews,” said WLU President Tim Borchers. “I have enjoyed working with her in the interim position and look forward to advancing important initiatives for the University with her leadership in academic affairs.”

Monteroso also has served as WLU’s interim president between former President W. Franklin Evans’ exit and Borchers’ hiring. She previously served as dean of the College of Education and Human Performance.

“As I step into the provost and vice president for academic affairs role at West Liberty University, I am deeply honored and excited to continue advancing the university’s commitment to academic excellence and student success,” said Monteroso. “With the support of our dedicated faculty, staff, and students, I am eager to lead initiatives that support the new strategic plan commitment to Community, Excellence, Innovation, and Integrity.”

Monteroso has led efforts to establish a pilot training program at the university and WLU launched its first doctorate program under her leadership. She also worked to expand dual enrollment offerings at area high schools.

She served as a faculty member at West Liberty, as the Center and Education Coordinator at Sylvan Learning Center, as a middle school teacher, as the volleyball coach, faculty and chair of physical education at Marietta College and as the volleyball coach and faculty at California Institute of Technology.

She holds an Ed.D. from Northcentral University, a master’s of education from Azusa Pacific University and a bachelor’s of science in history and secondary education from East Tennessee State University.
