Learning history

Members of the Rotary Club of Weirton Heights heard from local historian Paul Zuros during their Oct. 22 meeting, learning, in particular, about the history of women in Weirton and their role in keeping Weirton Steel operating during World War II. Zuros noted approximately 5,000 area men fought in the war, with women stepping up to work as tin floppers and quality control inspectors, among other roles. Their work, along with men who did not meet requirements to be drafted, and teens who left school early to work in the mill, kept Weirton Steel in production with no work stoppages. The company was the third largest steel producer during that time, breaking seven world records. He also noted contributions from women such as Mary Louise Kolanko, who played in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, and Goldie Baly, who was employed as a government clerk at the War Ration Board.
