Live music, vendors and more on tap for Winter Weekend

WINTERSVILLE — There will be much to see, hear and do when the Wintersville Winter Weekend returns Saturday and Sunday.

Volunteers behind Wednesdays in Wintersville have arranged for a day of food and other vendors, live music and activities between noon and 6 p.m. Saturday while the Christmas parade organized by village officials will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Joel John, who heads the volunteer committee behind Wednesdays in Wintersville, said with the cooperation of Wintersville Methodist Church, many of the features found at the summer street fair will be found indoors.

John said about 20 craft and other vendors will be set up in the church’s fellowship hall while a variety of table nativities will be displayed in the Center for Hope, a large community room adjacent to the church.

It also will serve as the venue for a handful of local groups who will perform a variety of Christmas music.

The entertainment schedule includes the church’s own bell choir at 2 p.m.; the Brassethounds, a brass ensemble, at 3 p.m.; and the choirs of Cross Creek and Hills elementary schools and John King Mussio Junior High School Band at 4 p.m.

John said individuals or groups who enjoy singing are invited to join the band for a Christmas carol sing-along during that last hour.

“Our goal is to fill that whole center with voices,” he said.

John noted community participation will be a big part of the festivities.

He has invited area residents to bring their table nativities for the display, adding they may be traditional or nontraditional and made with wood or other materials.

Those interested in doing so should call (740) 632-6572 for information.

Everyone also is invited to sponsor a luminary in memory or honor of a loved one for a $5 donation, with the proceeds going to the Tony Teramana Cancer Center’s T.E.A.R. Fund.

The fund is used to help patients of the Trinity Health System cancer treatment center with various needs.

“We hope to line all of Main Street with luminaria. We had almost 400 last year and have sold about 200 at this time,” said John.

He said some local businesses have assisted in soliciting sponsors for the lights, but there still will be time to do at his shop, Exquisite Creations by Joel, that day before they are lighted at 5 p.m.

John said members of the Indian Creek High School Honor Society again have volunteered to prepare and light the luminaria.

“They really took pride in that last year, and I want to give them a big thank-you for their efforts,” he said.

Last year, the luminaria and a Christmas tour of area homes organized by John raised more than $5,000 for the T.E.A.R. Fund.

On Saturday, there will be a bounce house in the church’s gym and an opportunity to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and purchase photos taken by Timages Photography, while the Wintersville Beautification Committee will be accepting donations for their efforts to beautify the village.

A handful of food trucks also have been booked for the front lot of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, which is holding its own vendor show and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

John said businesses along Main Street have been invited to participate in the event with special sales or other events.

Monica Pendleton of Cake Roll Creations will be teaming with EzFresh Meals to hold a chili cookoff, with a $50 cash prize awarded to the winner.

Set-up for the contest will be at 4 p.m., with judging to begin at 5 p.m. Those interested in participating should call (740) 424-9679 to register.

John also is encouraging everyone to attend the Christmas parade, which is organized by Tammy Straka and other volunteers and village officials.

It will begin at 4 p.m. near Ferguson’s House of Furniture and continue to the Kroger plaza and feature an assortment of units, including local marching bands, emergency vehicles and an appearance by Santa Claus.

Anyone interested in participating should call (740) 266-3175 by 4 p.m. Friday.
