Dam improvements

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently working to modernize the New Cumberland Locks and Dam. The project includes replacing old and outdated lock chambers with newer, larger ones to allow for more efficient navigation of larger barges and improving overall waterway capacity for commercial shipping. The project is part of a larger effort to modernize locks across the Ohio River Basin to support the nation’s economy. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provided more than $900 million in funds to upgrade locking facilities on the upper Ohio River as many of the older lock chambers are too small to keep up with today’s larger barges.
