Celebration

Area residents gathered at the Weirton Event Center Saturday for an afternoon of fun, food, and friendship, as part of local observances of the Juneteenth holiday. Organized by the Weirton Ecumenical Council, Saturday’s activities included live entertainment and games. With a theme of “One Body, Many Parts,” Weirton’s observances of the holiday, which marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, also included a church revival service Friday evening at Christ the King Church, led by the Rev. Samuel Williams. — Craig Howell
