A chance to get involved

There are many opportunities for our residents to get involved with their communities. One such way is to run for public office, where residents have the chance to shape the direction of their hometown.

Several of our local communities have municipal elections scheduled for this spring, and candidate registration currently is underway.

If you are a resident of Weirton, New Cumberland, Follansbee, Wellsburg or Bethany, and are interested in running for public office, we would encourage you to contact your local city clerk’s office for more information.

Weirton, Follansbee and Wellsburg each will hold their primary elections on April 7, and their general elections on June 9. Bethany, which doesn’t hold a primary election, also will have its general on June 9.

In Weirton, all seven seats on city council, as well as the office of mayor, are up for bid.

Follansbee, too, will have its entire council, as well as mayor, police chief, city clerk and city attorney on the ballot.

In Wellsburg, voters will have a choice on the city clerk and one council seat each to represent the city’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th wards.

Bethany will have a choice on the mayor, town recorder and five at-large council positions.

New Cumberland, meanwhile, is holding its election May 12, with seats up for grabs to include three seats on city council:?Ward 1, Seat A; Ward 2, Seat A and Ward 2, Seat B.

This is a good opportunity for anyone who has ever been interested in public service, and is looking to have an impact on the local level.

If you have ever considered running for election, we encourage you to take some time to learn more about the requirements.
