Media center will help shape the future

What constitutes the modern-day high school library?

The days of a library consisting solely of books has not been the norm for many years now. More than a generation ago, libraries in schools and communities began to take their first steps into the digital age, bringing computers – and eventually Internet access – into their storied halls to assist students and patrons with their research and other needs.

More services have slowly been added, and in many towns, you no longer have to even visit the physical library building to borrow your books.

Such a transformation is in the works at Oak Glen High School where a grant from the Chaffin Luhana Foundation is assisting with efforts to transform the school’s traditional library to a modern media center.

In addition to purchasing 800 new books, the $25,000 grant will go toward the purchase of a mobile lab, new furniture and wireless infrastructure. It also will serve as a hub for the school’s broadcast and journalism programs.

Today’s students need to be able to reach beyond a traditional classroom environment for their lessons for research, project collaboration and new methods of learning.

This new media center will help to put Oak Glen’s students on the right track for a more thorough education in the digital age.

We thank the Chaffin Luhana Foundation for their generous gift, and applaud the school and its media team for their efforts to enhance the learning opportunities for their students to better prepare them for the future.
