Better safe than sick with the flu

Though people are reminded from every corner, usually starting in late summer, that it’s flu shot time, there are people who ignore the available protection.

Maybe it’s an issue of cost. Maybe it’s an issue of convenience.

But come this time of year, it’s an issue of illness, plain and simple.

People are facing the need for hospitalization if they’ve got a bad enough case of influenza, and state health officials have said the number of people being hospitalized statewide from flu is on the rise. That’s only the people being reported. Many others are ill enough to see their phyisicans but are not hospitalized.

The point is, there is still the option of getting the vaccine locally. Shots are available through many of our local county health departments.

The federal Centers for Disease Control say the flu season has a few more peak weeks ahead. Better safe than sick, we’d say.
