Shine light on community stars

If you have been considering nominating a friend or neighbor to be honored as a 2018 Community Star, be advised that the window of opportunity to make that submission is quickly closing.

Wednesday is the deadline for nominations. That’s when the editors of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times will choose the 10 residents of the Tri-State Area who will be this year’s honorees.

Presented by Weirton Medical Center with special support from M&M True Value Hardware, the community stars program has the same goal it has had since it was started in 1998 — to choose those special people who make a great difference in the cities and towns they live in simply by caring for those around them.

Nominees can come from Jefferson, Harrison, Hancock, Brooke and Washington counties. Those selected as stars will be recognized during a Sept. 17 dinner at Froehlich’s Classic Corner in downtown Steubenville. They’ll each receive a medallion and a gift card, and their profiles will be included in a commemorative booklet that will be inserted into our editions before the dinner.

Stars can be just about anyone — a next-door neighbor, a co-worker or just an acquaintance. They can be a man or woman who coaches the local youth sports team, a fellow church member or the quiet resident who lives down the street and always answers the call when help is needed. Remember, there’s no age restriction — past recipients have included pre-teens and those in their 90s.

Honorees are those people who always are willing to step up and help when the need arises. They live all around us, and they truly are what makes our region a special place to live.

Each of the past honorees has been willing to go out of his or her way to help others, while all the time seeking to avoid the spotlight. They are the people who do the right thing just because it’s the right thing to do.

If you have already submitted a nomination to City Editor Jody Wisbith, we say thank you. If you have not yet made a submission, we urge you to do so before Wednesday’s deadline and help us select this year’s community stars.
