Coming together to give thanks

It’s a wonderful time of the year to count our blessings.

And in our area, blessings come in many forms throughout our communities. One of those forms is the many area locations that offer free, hot, traditional Thanksgiving meals to anyone wanting one, regardless of need.

These dinners serve not only to help those who might be less fortunate, but also just to share some time with neighbors and maybe make some new friends.

At the Salvation Army in Steubenville, a free Thanksgiving dinner will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the 332 N. Fourth St. location, and there will be home delivery available for shut-ins. In past years, approximately 900 meals were served on Thanksgiving, and what a blessing it is that so many people are served a hot dinner, with a big helping of camaraderie to go along with it.

Also in downtown Steubenville, the Urban Mission will serve up a hot holiday feast beginning at 11 a.m. today at the downtown location.

And across the river in Weirton, the Weirton Ministerial Association once again will host its community Thanksgiving dinner, with support from local churches, civic organizations and the local business community. Set from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Greater Weirton Senior Center, the dinner is available for free to anyone.

Several other area restaurants and businesses are offering a free Thanksgiving dinner, and it would be impossible to name them all here.

It is wonderful to see such camaraderie and brotherhood in our communities, and we thank and applaud everyone involved in putting these dinners together, giving their time during this holiday away from their family and friends. Their work does not go unnoticed and is just one more aspect of what makes our area so great.
