The calendar has rolled into February, and that means the seasons are winding down for area high school athletes.
Already, the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference has crowned its champions in swimming and wrestling. The bi-state conference will decide its girls basketball champions Saturday, and the boys titles will be on the line Feb. 16.
Ohio and West Virginia soon will crown champions in swimming and wrestling, and sectional basketball tournament play is set to begin in a little more than a week.
Area fans had a little more to excited about last weekend when the OVAC held its annual cheering championships Saturday at Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena.
When the competition was done, teams representing two area schools, Toronto and Weirton Madonna, had claimed championships in their respective classes.
The Red Knights continued their domination in Class AA, winning the title for the fourth-consecutive year and ninth time overall. That means that the four senior members of the Toronto squad were undefeated in the OVAC event.
Members of the Madonna team, meanwhile, won their second-straight Class A crown. Prior to those consecutive titles, the Blue Dons had not claimed the championship since 2006.
Congratulations to Toronto coach Natalie Mousourakis and Madonna coach Maria Canella and their teams for claiming OVAC titles, and good luck to the rest of the area athletes who will be competing for titles in the coming weeks.
