Tackling climate change effectively

While some ultra-liberal members of Congress are advocating crazy, impossible initiatives such as the “New Green Deal,” some of their peers are going quietly about the business of doing something productive about climate change.

Last week, U.S. Reps. David McKinley, R-W.Va., and Scott Peters, D-Calif., introduced a bill that could do some real good. It is HR 1166, the Utilizing Significant Emissions with Innovative Technologies Act.

If enacted, the measure would promote development and use of technologies to remove carbon dioxide from factory and power plant emissions. The CO2 could then be used to manufacture useful products. HR 1166 would provide a total of $85 million to promote such work.

Providing federal support for development of CO2-reduction technologies is vital. Simply issuing mandates, as “New Green Deal” proponents desire, would wreck the economy while accomplishing little or nothing worthwhile.

House members should approve HR 1166, and so should the U.S. Senate. It would be an important real-world step toward lessening the impact of climate change. So would numerous other thoughtful, if not dramatic, measures being considered in both chambers of Congress.
