In search of Community Stars
If you have not nominated a friend or neighbor to be among those who are considered for selection as a 2019 Community Star, we hope you will take to heart this reminder that the window of opportunity to make a submission is quickly closing.
Wednesday is the deadline for nominations. After that, the editors of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times will choose the 10 residents of the Tri-State Area who will be this year’s honorees.
Presented by Weirton Medical Center with special support from M&M True Value Hardware, the community stars program has the same goal it has had since it was started in 1998 — to choose those special people all around us who make a great difference in the cities and towns they live in simply by caring for those around them.
Nominees can come from Jefferson and Harrison counties in Ohio, Hancock and Brooke counties in West Virginia and Washington County in Pennsylvania. Those selected as stars will be recognized during a Sept. 25 dinner at Froehlich’s Classic Corner in Steubenville. They’ll each receive an award and a gift card, and their profiles will be included in a commemorative booklet.
Stars can be just about anyone — a next-door neighbor, a co-worker or just an acquaintance. They can be a man or woman who coaches the local youth sports team, a fellow church member or the quiet resident who lives down the street and always answers the call when help is needed. Remember, there’s no age restriction — past recipients have ranged in age from pre-teen to their 90s.
Honorees are those people who always are willing to step up and help when the need arises. They live all around us, and they truly are what makes our region a special place to live.
Each of the past honorees has been willing to go out of his or her way to help others, while all the time seeking to avoid the spotlight. They are the people who do the right thing just because it’s the right thing to do.
If you have already submitted a nomination, we say thank you. If you have not yet made a submission, we urge you to do so before Wednesday’s deadline and help us select this year’s community stars.
