Grateful for first responders

The life-saving efforts of our first responders often is taken for granted until they are experienced first-hand.

The men and women who serve in our area’s police departments, fire departments and emergency medical services spend their entire careers training and learning new skills so they will be at the top of their game when the call comes in.

Recently, three of Hancock County’s first responders answered that call when County Clerk George Foley went through a medical emergency.

Foley honored the individuals — Sgt. Scott Little, Levi Anderson and Don Sprouse — by presenting them with the CPR Life Medal during last week’s Hancock County Commission meeting. The pin is given to those who have saved lives through the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Foley explained his emergency came when he passed out, noting he still has no memories for several days after.

Those honored were instrumental in reviving Foley and getting him the care he needed, just as they do on a daily basis to help others in our area.

We are fortunate to have so many individuals available to assist us in our times of need. They are our friends, neighbors and family members. They also are heroes, and we appreciate their constant service and vigilance.
