Keep the spirit shining bright

The weekend’s rain has not been able to dampen the holiday spirit in Weirton.

For the fourth year, Weirton will be lighting up the night Sunday, and we hope to see the community turn out for the festivities.

The city, working with Renaissance Weirton and a number of local businesses, will light up the official community Christmas tree during a ceremony set to begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The event, which had been scheduled to be held this evening, was rescheduled after forecasts called for a wet Saturday.

Sunday’s plans call for live entertainment, including performances by DeJaVu and the Hancock County Victorian Carolers, refreshments and more, capped off with the lighting of the tree and a fireworks display.

The city will continue its collection of food and toy donations to benefit local charitable organizations as well.

The evening will include the official release of this year’s Success in Unity Christmas ornament. The program, launched in 2017 to mark Weirton’s 70th anniversary, reflects the multi-cultural nature of the community, with this year’s ornament recognizing our residents of Greek heritage.

This is among the many area events planned to help kick off the holiday season in the Upper Ohio Valley. During the coming weeks, there will be parades, light displays and other local attractions set up for all to see and share.

We encourage everyone take some time to attend, share time with family and friends and enjoy the spirit of Christmas.
