Never too late to honor our heroes

It is never too late to honor a hero. It was appropriate, then, that the late Joseph Guio Jr. was recognized in Follansbee this week, nearly 75 years after his courage and compassion was demonstrated.

Guio was serving in the Navy during World War II. In December 1944, his ship, the USS Monoghan, was among many caught in a fierce typhoon in the Philippine Sea. Hundreds of sailors died. Three Naval vessels sank.

Guio courageously saved some of his shipmates. Just six men of the crew of 256 survived. Guio was not among them.

On Monday, with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. in attendance, members of Guio’s family received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and a citation from the Secretary of the Navy. A resolution honoring him has been entered into the Congressional Record.

All involved in obtaining the recognition are to be commended. Joseph Guio was a hero. At last, the whole world knows that.
