Project some needed good news for area

A long-discussed project appears to be moving forward in Weirton, and if all goes well, it should result in a development of which the entire Ohio Valley can be proud.

Weirton city officials, representatives of Park Drive Development LLC, the Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle and McKinley and Associates met last week for an update on the Park Drive development project.

The first piece of the puzzle is a retail and residential plan, featuring two anchor buildings with areas for new businesses on the lower floor and apartment-style spaces on the top tiers. Two other business areas also are planned, along with an outdoor commons area.

Working with the developers and architects, the city is finalizing plans for streets, parking lots, lights, water and sewer systems, with funds from the Tax Increment Financing district encompassing the Three Springs Business Park to cover the costs.

To complement the work, the city also is working on a streetscape project for the area, adding sidewalks and other amenities to Park Drive.

There are still a few steps to be taken with the initial portion of the project, but officials feel it should be ready to go by mid summer.

We hope so.

While we understand any development takes time, this certainly would be some much-needed good news for our area.
