Investment in our park appreciated

Recreation in Hancock County has received some tender, loving care in recent months, with the construction of a new shower house and various other improvements at Tomlinson Run State Park.

The project, which was announced more than a year ago, was officially unveiled Wednesday, and we thank all those who were involved in making it a reality.

Hancock County Commissioners committed $200,000 in hotel-motel tax revenue, with the state Department of Natural Resources contributing several hundred thousand more. What initially was focused on a new shower house for the park’s group camp area expanded to improvements to the camp’s kitchen, new WiFi and more, including plans for renovations to the public pool at Tomlinson Run.

Tomlinson Run State Park is a true jewel for our area. The only state park currently in the Northern Panhandle, it offers plenty of space for area residents and visitors alike to enjoy a variety of activities, from swimming to disc golf, miniature golf, boating, fishing and camping. There are several trails running throughout the park’s wooded landscapes allowing visitors to get in touch with nature while going for a walk or run.

Tomlinson Run also serves as a bit of a focal point for the community, acting as the home site for the Hancock County Oldtime Fair, various youth events and other special activities throughout the year. Each summer, the group camp is the site of a week-long camp for local youth participating in 4-H.

West Virginia’s state parks have received increased attention in recent years, with new investments in more modern facilities and technology in the hope of drawing visitors to the Mountain State.

We are thankful to see Tomlinson Run receive some of this attention, as well, and encourage area residents, fellow West Virginians and out-of-state visitors to consider a trip to Hancock County in order to see what our northernmost state park has to offer.
