Brooke County PRO talks should continue

Brooke County commissioners and school officials should continue talking about use of sheriff’s deputies as school resource officers, despite the failure of months of talks over the issue.

Board of Education members have agreed to set up a new system of hiring experienced law enforcement personnel to serve as resource officers. The cost would be significantly less than that to use deputies for the purpose.

But one board member, Stacy Hooper, abstained from voting on the matter. She said she was not satisfied with the course of negotiations between commissioners and school officials.

Using deputies has one big advantage: Employees of the sheriff’s office have countywide law enforcement authority. Board-employed resource officers probably would not.

Talks between commissioners and school officials have failed dismally. That is no reason for both sides not to keep trying to reach agreement.
