Keeping us safe from fire

Fire safety and prevention should be on all of our minds, especially this time of year as we begin to look for ways to stay warm in the colder months.

While we understand that, sometimes, fires happen, it is important to be as prepared as possible. With that in mind, we thank the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 948, which represents the firefighters of the Weirton Fire Department, for their efforts to organize a fire safety day this Saturday.

The event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Weirton Event Center, is open to residents of the city of Weirton.

By providing proof of city residency, individuals will be able to receive two smoke detectors, a carbon monoxide detector and a fire extinguisher at no cost.

It is all part of our local firefighters’ efforts to protect the community and the lives of its residents.

Fire extinguisher demonstrations also will be available to make certain residents know how to use their safely and properly.

The Weirton Fire Department also will have its educational “Smoke House” on site to help provide tips on how to get out of a home in the event there is a fire, and the Weirton Police Department will have demonstrations from its K-9 unit.

Our local safety forces go above and beyond in their efforts to serve, and we thank them for those efforts.
