School employees should be a priority

Once a vaccine for COVID-19 becomes available, the demand for it will be enormous. As we have pointed out, states need to have thoughtful plans in place.

West Virginia’s plan has been submitted to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is good news. So are sketchy details of the plan.

First to get vaccinated will be health care workers, state public health officer Dr. Anye Amjad said this week. “The next ones will be the most vulnerable populations like nursing homes,” she added.

We suggest teachers and other school employees should be high on the priority list. So should those on school systems’ substitute lists.

Of course, state officials are right in the priorities they have stated. But getting children back in school — and safeguarding adults in their schools — is important, too. Getting school employees vaccinated would be a gigantic step toward that.
