Symposium beneficial for our future

The Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce is known for its support of the local business community, but it also reaches out to some of our community’s younger residents with its programs.

One such program, the Dr. Barbara A. Matey High School Business Symposium, recently was held, bringing together more than 100 high school sophomores from five area schools to connect with local professionals for a glimpse into the business world and to receive tips to assist with their post-education lives.

Participating students learn the importance of money management, marketing, preparation for job interviews and more through discussions, skits and hands-on activities, culminating with the development and testing of a product.

The event is named in honor and memory of Matey, a long-time educator and businessperson who was active with the chamber and who, for many years, helped to lead the organization of the event as chair of the chamber’s education committee. Matey, who died in 2013, understood the importance of educating our youth and preparing them for the future no matter the path they take.

We thank the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce for continuing to provide such a worthwhile program and an opportunity for our youth to learn. We also thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who make this annual symposium possible.
