Bow hunt beneficial to community

For many years, a controlled bow hunt has been organized through the Weirton Police Department as a way to better control the deer population in the city.

This year’s hunt is set for Sept. 3 through Dec. 31, and is open to anyone who has been a resident of either Hancock or Brooke counties for at least the last six months.

In order to participate, interested hunters must attend one of the pre-meetings to be held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Aug. 9 or 10 a.m. Aug. 20 in the Weirton Room of the Millsop Community Center. They also must have an International Bow Hunter Education Foundation Card, a photo identification, a $20 registration fee and an ink pen. Registered participants will be provided with revised regulations, hunting permits, maps of the designated hunting areas and other documents.

The bow hunt serves an important purpose by helping to control the local deer population in Weirton. Overpopulation of any animal in a community leads to a variety of dangers to the animals as well as the people.

By working to control the population, the hope is to reduce the potential for deer being struck by motorists, damage to property and other preventable situations.

We thank the city police department for once again helping to organize this hunt.
