Change is needed

To the Editor,

Recently on my travels through Hancock County, I have seen several businesses with petitions concerning the start time in the Hancock schools.

After talking to different people throughout the county, I find that there is a Facebook page dedicated to this subject. I checked it out and found it loaded with information from various medical and university studies all saying it is unhealthy for not only our children but all children to get up as early as they do to be in school by 7:25 a.m. for the middle schools and earlier for the high schools.

This is a Facebook page that I feel every parent in Hancock County should check out. It is HancockCountyWV Start School Later. It is very informative and you would be surprised what you will learn.

I read in recent news reports that the school board president feels that the current board is committed to continued academic excellence in our students achievements. If our students didn’t have to start school so early maybe the excellence and achievements would be greater. If I am told by my doctor or one of my son’s doctors what is best for myself or him, I do it.

The Facebook page lists what is best, but apparently Mr. Durante and the rest of our school board feel they are smarter than all the scientist, doctors and others who did those studies. Maybe it’s time for change.
