Celebrate our heritage

To the Editor,

The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center is pleased to present the 11th-annual Festival of Nations on Saturday, March 16, 2019. Rain or shine, it will be held indoors at the Weirton Millsop Community Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As always, the admission is free, as is the parking.

We are indebted to many volunteers of the Festival committee and others who tirelessly help in putting together the Festival every year.

It has been my honor and privilege to be the chairman of the Festival committee of WAMCC from 2009 to 2018. And now I am pleased to see that Mrs. Kal Gupta will assume this position. She was a member of the Festival committee for several years and the Director of the Festival 2017 and 2018. I sincerely wish her good luck and may her next 10 years be as successful and fun as the first 10 years.

The upcoming Festival is packed with performers of music and dance, several ethnic foods and display tables. Without passport, get ready to see and taste the cultures and foods of the world. So far the countries and groups represented in one fashion or another are: USA, African American, China, Frontier Persons, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Japan, Philippines, Poland and Ukraine. Surely the list will grow.

We are pleased to have Spicy Gringo bring Mexican food for the first time to the Festival.

Performers have been requested to perform dances on the stage and also the popular audience participation and coaching on the floor.

Now all we need is people, especially children to come and enjoy the live melting pot in action and see “Unity in Diversity” in our great country.

I wish to convey my thanks to the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center for reviving the tradition of the Festival of Nations, which was celebrated with great pomp and show from 1934 to 1944. Thanks are also due to the City of Weirton, Weirton Medical Center, all the sponsors, participants, The Weirton Daily Times, WTOV9, WEIR, CVB, Festival committee members and other volunteers, staff at the Weirton Millsop Community Center, Earl Tuttle, and the large number of people who come out, attend and support the festival every year.

Please come and attend, let your friends and family know about this annual function that brings us all together for dances, music, food and fun.

Please give as much help and support to the new chairperson, Mrs. Kal Gupta, and her team as you bestowed upon me.

With thanks for opportunity to serve our community.

J.K. Luthra
