STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's and women's tennis teams lost Sunday to John Carroll University at Belleview Park. The women dropped an 8-1 decision and the men, 6-3.

"Even though the girls lost they have improved just from this past Thursday," FUS assistant coach Patrick O'Hearn said. "This will definitely help them prepare for conference championships in the upcoming weeks."

No. 5 singles seed Hannah Pettit was the only Lady Baron to win, beating her opponent 6-2, 6-1.

The Lady Barons (11-3, 8-0) play Waynesburg University on Oct. 16.

The men's team, with two returning players, finished 0-3 in the fall season.

"Although we lost, I believe that this has been the boys best performance so far," FUS head coach Jeremy Ellis said.

"I am happy with their matches today, and I am very hopeful for our team."

No. 2 seed Zack Quiza won his singles match 3-6, 7-6, (7-3) while teammate No. 3 seed Patrick Rowzie won 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.

"Those two wins were huge for our freshmen players," Ellis said.

Rowzie also won his No. 2 doubles match 8-4 with partner John Sultis.

"The new guys we have are really good, talented players, but they also have personalities that totally fit with and enhance the team," Ellis said.
