Oak Glen wins Class AA Region 1, Section 1 crown

NEW MANCHESTER - The Golden Bears dominated the action on the court.

The Oak Glen volleyball team made quick work of Fairmont Senior and Hancock County-rival Weir en route to capturing the West Virginia Class AA Region 1, Section 1 Tournament title Thursday night at Oak Glen.

The Golden Bears outscored their opposition 150-60 on the night.

Oak Glen defeated Fairmont Senior, 25-3, 25-11, 25-3, and then topped Weir, 25-18, 25-11, 25-14.

All told, Oak Glen spent less than an hour-and-a-half on the court en route to winning six-straight games and two-straight matches.

With the two wins, the Golden Bears are now 35-6 on the season. Oak Glen will now play in the Region 1 Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at East Fairmont High School. The Red Riders also qualified for the regional tournament.

"It was a good night," Oak Glen head coach Ethel Riser said. "I would have liked to have had it a little tougher against Weir, but I guess we didn't have to be."

The Golden Bears dispatched the Polar Bears in less than 40 minutes of time on the court.

Fairmont Senior was never able to really get anything going against Oak Glen.

For the Golden Bears, Sydney Kell collected 30 points, five aces, 45 sets, 17 assists and one spike; Lacee Porter recorded 14 points, four aces, four spikes, nine kills and one block; and Morgan Poling produced one point, three spikes, nine kills and one block.

Kaityln Smith tallied nine points, one ace and two digs; Madison Juszczak delivered four spikes, one kill and one block; and Carissa Williams contributed seven sets and two assists.

Vanessa Hissam had three spikes, five kills and one dig; Abby Tice chipped in with two points and one spike; and Jessica Stivason ended up with one spike and two kills.

Jessica Hutton finished with five points, two aces, three spikes and one kill.

The Bees advanced to the semifinals by defeating the Huskies in four games in the quarterfinals Wednesday night at Fairmont Senior.

Weir advanced to the title tilt by defeating the Bees in three games 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.

Erin Hawthorne had 14 digs; Samantha McCartney had 52 sets and one dig; Haley McLaughlin had one dig, 67 sets and one ace; Kimberlyn Persina had 15 kills, one ace, five blocks and seven digs; Selena Wolverton had 11 kills, eight digs and two aces; Elizabeth Kush had 10 kills and five digs; Morgan Goff had two digs; Michayla Dobosz had seven kills and two digs; and Lauren Rosnick had six digs and three aces.

The Red Riders put forth a much-stronger fight than the Polar Bears. The Red Riders led 8-1 at one point in the third game before the Golden Bears stormed back en route to recording the sweep.

For Oak Glen, Kell tallied 12 points, 59 sets, 13 assists and one spike; Hissam scored 10 points to go along with one ace, eight spikes, eight kills, two blocks and three digs; and Poling picked up 10 points, one ace, five spikes, four kills, two blocks and eight digs.

Porter produced six points, one ace, seven spikes, 11 kills and five digs; Stivason netted seven spikes, nine kills and three blocks; and Juszczak contributed six points, two spikes and one kill.

Williams delivered 22 sets and three assists; Smith chipped in with four points and three digs; and Hutton ended up with three spikes and one kill.

"It means we have a real good shot at making it to the state tournament," Riser about what winning the sectional title means for her team. "We will be the No. 1 seed. We will be playing the No. 2 team out of Section 2. It will give us the upper hand."

For the Red Riders, Hawthorne had eight digs and one ace; Ontasia Petteway had one dig; McLaughlin had 10 digs, 27 sets and one kill; Persina had 11 kills, six blocks and seven digs; Wolverton had three kills, eight digs and one ace; Kush had four kills and eight digs; Goff had four digs; Dobosz had two kills and three digs; and Rosnick had four digs and two aces.

As a result of its runner-up finish to Oak?Glen,?Weir also earned a spot in Saturday's regional tournament.

Madonna still in hunt

WEIRTON - In the West Virginia Class A Region 1 tournament Madonna travels to Tyler Consolidated Saturday to face the Silver Knights.
