Inaugural lecture good for our area

November 13, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

Residents from across the Tri-State Area will have the chance to learn about what life was like inside the presidency of John F. Kennedy Wednesday night.

That's when Clint Hill, the former Secret Service agent who was assigned to protect first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, speaks at 7:30 p.m. in the Steubenville High School auditorium.

His discussion will be the inaugural lecture in the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce Lecture and Concert Series, and it figures to be an interesting night filled with details about work on the protective detail and experiences gained while traveling the world with the woman who was, arguably, our most captivating first lady.

Hill will be joined by journalist Lisa McCubbin, who teamed with him to co-author the book "Mrs. Kennedy and Me" to offer a multi-media presentation.

The timing was right to add the lecture component to the series, according to the organizers, which include the chamber and the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. Announced in May 2010, the series featured successful concerts in Harding Stadium by Little Big Town in 2011 and the Clarks in 2012. Those concerts were held as part of the community's Fourth of July celebration each year.

If all goes as planned, Wednesday's presentation by Hill and McCubbin will be be followed by another lecture in the spring, as the series assumes its twice-a-year schedule.

Joining as sponsors are Eastern Gateway Community College and the Franciscan University of Steubenville. Area businesses providing support include Bayberry House Bed and Breakfast, Apollo Pro Cleaning, Piergallini Catering and Steubenville City Schools.

We welcome Hill and McCubbin to town and thank everyone involved for getting the local speaker series started. Events such as this, and the summer concerts, help improve the quality of life for all members of our community.
