WINTERSVILLE - Sarah Cross, agriculture and natural resource educator at the Jefferson County Ohio State University Extension office, is well into her duties with the Extension after starting her job in mid-September.

A former field geologist for Aero-Tek Inc. and working out of New Philadelphia, she is now planning Farm to School programs with Stanton Elementary School in Hammondsville, where the pupils in third through sixth grades are planting lettuce in a greenhouse and then will be consumed in the school cafeteria.

"We are doing experiments, with a chance to do hands-on science experiments and providing food for the school cafeteria," she said.

"Oil and gas programs are scheduled, with a talk in Marietta on pipeline easements and right-of-way agreements, and I am working with the Jefferson County Cattleman's Association to develop a beef school," she said of other Extension projects.

Cross will be working with the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Eastern Ohio Grazing Council on developing a pasture walk curriculum as well.

"There are a great many agriculture people in the area and we need to meet the needs of farmers," she said.

"I would like to start a Master Gardener program, and anyone interested in this can call me at (740) 264-2212 or e-mail at I am interested in having a community garden through a horticultural workshop series," Cross explained.

The office is located at 587 Bantam Ridge Road.

"Kay Clay of Harrison County will help to coordinate the Master Gardener program for both counties if there is an interest," she added. "There are many gardening questions and questions on insect identification that are asked, along with the livestock management and water quality for oil and gas development that I want to do."
