WEIRTON - A candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in front of Millsop Community Center to commemorate the lives lost last week when a gunman opened fire in a Connecticut elementary school.

Mayor George Kondik said the service is intended "to show our heartfelt sympathy for the loss of those young lives and the teachers."

"The devastation is not just in Newtown, it's throughout the country," Kondik said, "and we as a loving community are showing our concern."

The shootings left 20 pupils and six adults, including the alleged shooter, dead.

Kondik said the event will include readings by several area pastors, including the Rev. Jim Rhodes of Mercy Baptist Church; the Rev. Jim Foglio of Covenant Church; and the Rev. Manuel Gelido of St. Joseph the Worker Church.

Music will be by Carrie Oliver and the St. Paul Church children's choir and the Covenant Church choir.

There also will be comments on behalf of U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.; Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-Wheeling; and Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce President Brenda Mull.

The names of the victims will be read aloud, Kondik said. There also will be a candlelighting ceremony, and those attending will be asked to sign a special banner that will be delivered to the Newtown community.

"We're also going to accept gifts and donations that we'll package and send to the mayor of Newtown," he said, adding the service will be videotaped by a Weir High student and a copy sent to the Newtown mayor as well.
