Show support for Newtown

December 19, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

Newtown, Conn. may seems like a long way from the Ohio Valley, but the effects of the school shootings in that community are being felt far and wide across the nation.

The senseless killing of 20 children and several adults has us all questioning many things, from school security to gun control. But this also is a time to reach out, show our support and try to help the Newtown community get through this tragedy and begin to heal.

Many towns and cities throughout the United States are doing what they can to do just that, sending prayers and messages of hope to Newtown and its residents. Many also are showing their unity through candlelit vigils and other services.

Among those services are two taking place tonight in the Ohio Valley. The first is set for 6 p.m. in Beech Bottom, with residents gathering at the veterans memorial in that town. A second will take place at 7 p.m. on the front steps of the Millsop Community Center.

We thank the organizers of both of these events and encourage our residents to attend.

Students at Bethany College also are stepping up to help.

One of the young victims of Friday's shooting, Caroline Previdi, is the daughter of Jeff Previdi, a 1994 graduate of the college and a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. A scholarship is being established in Caroline's memory, with the hope of raising $100,000 to assist students majoring in education.

It is unfortunate tragedies such as this occur. But when they do, we, as a nation, also show our strength by coming together to support one another. We urge you to join in that showing of support for the community of Newtown and its residents.
